Hemingway’s Realistic Stonefly Nymph

One of those patterns that’s earned its reputation on the water. Hemingway’s Realistic Stonefly Nymph is a well-known, proven fly designed to closely match the look and behavior of natural stonefly nymphs. With its slim, segmented profile and natural movement in current, it presents exactly what trout expect to see drifting along the bottom.

These patterns are widely trusted for a reason — they consistently produce when fish are feeding subsurface and ignoring less convincing flies. It sinks efficiently, tracks naturally through fast water, and holds its shape even after multiple fish. Not overly bulky, not stiff — just a clean, realistic presentation that works across a wide range of conditions. If stoneflies are part of your river system, this is one of those flies you’ll want to have with you. Very effective and deadly in the water. Guaranteed, you will be amazed by the results.

Choose from 5 colors: Black, Tan, Gold, Dark Brown & Pale, and 3 hook sizes:#6, #8, #10. Also available as an assorted set of 10 flies, covering a practical mix of colors and sizes for varied conditions.

Stonefly Nymph Fishing

Stonefly nymphs live along the bottom, so the key is getting your fly down and keeping it there. Fish them deep, with regular bottom contact, especially in faster water where naturals get dislodged and tumble through the drift. Riffles, pocket water, seams, and the edges of heavier current are all prime water.

The main technique when stonefly nymph fishing is to try to imitate the natural behavioral drifting of real insects down the bottom of the stream and keep the fly at the trout's eye level. Drag-free, dead drifting along the bottom is the best option. Start with an upstream short cast to allow the fly to drop to the bottom, then dead drift down the current until it starts lifting up to the surface. Extending the drift downstream as long as possible would pay off. Using a strike indicator is recommended as it can greatly help in identifying the action.
