Realistic Stonefly Nymph Wing Buds & Back

Realistic Stonefly Nymph Wing Buds & Back is one of Hemingway's signature fly tying materials, developed for tying highly realistic stonefly nymph patterns. These pre-cut, preformed wing buds and body backs are tied directly onto the top of the fly, creating the distinctive upper profile of a natural stonefly nymph without having to build these details from scratch.

Made from flexible, waterproof, and UV-resistant material, they are durable, easy to work with, and produce a clean, consistent finish on every fly. By saving time at the vise while adding realistic detail, they make tying professional-looking stonefly nymphs quicker and easier.

For the most authentic result, pair them with Stonefly Nymph Legs to complete a lifelike stonefly imitation.

Available in a range of natural colors and three sizes:

  • Small – recommended for hook size #10
  • Medium – recommended for hook size #8
  • Large – recommended for hook size #6

Longer shank hooks are recommended.

Pack contents:

  • Small & Medium: 20 sets per pack
  • Large: 15 sets per pack

How to Fish Stonefly Nymphs

Stonefly nymphs live along the bottom, so the key is getting your fly down and keeping it there. Fish them deep, maintaining regular bottom contact, especially in faster water where natural stonefly nymphs become dislodged and drift downstream. Riffles, pocket water, seams, and the edges of heavier current are all prime holding water.

The most effective technique is to imitate the natural drift of a real stonefly nymph along the streambed, keeping the fly at the trout's eye level. A drag-free dead drift close to the bottom is usually the best presentation. Start with a short upstream cast to give the fly time to sink, then allow it to drift naturally with the current until it begins to lift toward the surface. Extending the drift as far downstream as possible will often result in additional takes.

Using a strike indicator can greatly improve strike detection, especially when fishing deeper runs or faster currents where takes are often subtle.
