Hellgrammite Fly Fishing
Hellgrammites represent a larval stage of dobsonfly (Corydalus cornutus), aquatic insects and members of the order Megaloptera. As adults, dobsonflies are not so significant for angling. On the other hand, their larval stage is quite important, especially given the size of these species and the fact that no fish will easily pass such a chunky meal. Dobsonflies usually hatch just above water, on the rock ledge or an overhanging branch. These insects spend two to three years as larvae. Hellgrammites live inrocky, fresh, well-oxygenated running streams and usually can be found around bottom rocks and debris. They are predators and feed on other insects and are famous for being able to crawl ("swim") through water in both directions - forward and backward. As they spend most of their time feeding on the river-bottom and under debris, they are most vulnerable during their behavioral drift. Dead-drifting, swinging and tumbling the fly along the bottom would be the best techniques when fishing these fly patterns.
