JMC Yoto Nymph Semi-Automatic Fly Reel
JMC expands its legendary semi-automatic fly reel family, the YOTO series, with the introduction of the Yoto Nymph – a specialized model designed to meet the demands of modern nymph fishing, where traditional fly lines are often replaced by monofilament lines.
To optimize the retrieve of monofilament lines while protecting them from abrasion, the Yoto Nymph features a durable ceramic ring embedded directly in the fly reel frame as a line guide. The exceptionally smooth surface of the ring prevents wear and tear and minimizes abrasion on the monofilament line, and its hard ceramic material safeguards against cutting and notching when reeling under tension.
With an impressive line retrieve capacity, a single pull on the reel’s lever mechanism spools up approximately 2 meters of line, making it highly practical for Euro nymphing. This technique requires constant contact with nymphs for successful fishing, and the lever mechanism allows quick winding of any loose line when you get a take, enabling smooth and direct fish play.
The Yoto Nymph includes a reel handle, which is convenient, especially when using thin monofilament lines or when fighting a large fish. Please note that the fly reel cannot be converted from left- to right-hand operation, so you must hold the fly rod in your right hand while retrieving via the fly reel handle.
This fly reel also incorporates a finely adjustable reel drag, effortlessly controlled by a large and easily accessible adjustment wheel. Properly adjusting the reel drag minimizes the risk of breaking tippets during fishing, which is especially crucial when using fine tippets.
Crafted from a block of 6061 aluminum, the Yoto Nymph boasts exceptional construction and workmanship, typical of JMC’s high standards. The reel’s weight, a surprisingly light 144 grams, makes it the perfect balance for lightweight and long Euro nymphing fly rods. Anodized in an elegant metallic grey, the reel drag adjustment wheel stands out in a vibrant orange hue.
Despite its compact size, the Yoto Nymph’s spool features a large arbor design, reducing the memory effect and enhancing line retrieval capabilities. The reel’s capacity is nominally rated for a WF #3 line with 20 meters of backing, making it more than sufficient for monofilament line use in euro nymphing.
Comes delivered in a protective neoprene reel bag.

My older brother had a semi-automatic reel on his bass rod back in the early 1970s. I was an adolescent at the time and totally screwed it up playing with it in the yard. Those old wheels utilized an internal spring that wound up to create tension that would retrieve the line when you pulled the handle. This really is a whole different deal. It is a wonder of mechanical design. A series of multiplier gears spins the spool to retrieve line at the very high rate. When you catch a fish hook a fish, a couple of flicks of your ring and pinky finger of your rod hand retrieves any excess line on the water putting the fish on the reel immediately. My fishing buddies thought it was a gimmick until I hooked into a 20+ inch fish on the Oconoluftee last spring while euro nymphing. Then they were falling all over themselves to try my rod and reel. I only wish they made one appropriate for trout Spey. Just watching the gears turn is hypnotic. Check out the online videos and get one and try it. There are other brands making semi-automatic reels but they are usually much more expensive. The quality of this reel is first rated and I don’t see the need to pay double.

First, excellent service from Frost Fly!!!! The Yoto Nymph is a nice reel. I am not really impessed with the drag. Set to heavy for fine tippet. I have found that this is a problem for many.

Customer service was great . The reel was impossible to adjust to a light drag for light tippets
