Fly Tying Hemingway’s Brown Mayfly Nymph with Jim Misiura

Another great fly tying recipe from Jim Misiura with his easy-to-follow steps – a variation of a mayfly nymph using Hemingway’s realistic parts. Thanks, Jim for sharing this with us.

Ingredients

To tie Jim Misiura’s Hemingway’s Brown Mayfly Nymph, you need the following:

Steps

  • Start by putting a lead wire, mostly on the thorax section, start just in front of the point of the hook, about 10-12 wraps. The amount of the wire you put in depends on the depth of the water, how strong the current is, etc. For small stream you do not even need any.
  • Secure the lead wraps using brown thread, start at the eye and cover the lead wraps pretty good to flatten it out, especially rear section that is going to end up in abdomen.
  • Next we put on the Wing Buds section, by the clear tab, leaving a little bit of that tab over the eye of the hook. Tie that in.
  • Take the rubber legs and line them up on the wing buds part, put couple of wraps, press to stick them together and then wrap down the rest of it.
  • Do a light fold over to measure where the abdomen (mayfly nymph body) would be tied.
  • Tie in the abdomen (nymph body) by the tab pointing forward and then fold it over, making sure you keep it on top.
  • Take fine copper wire for the rib and tie it in on top, wrapping it in well, making sure under-body is intact.
  • Pull the wire to the side, fold that body over and tie it right in the tail.
  • Take the Back section, tie it by the clear tab at the bottom of the abdomen, not leaving any tab hanging over, keeping it on top.
  • Wrap the thread forward, take the Back section and fold that up and press down.
  • Take the wire, put one wrap underneath the tails first, then wrap the wire forward over the body.
  • Tie the rib off right in front of the abdomen.
  • Take some head cement, or some UV cure, not a lot, just a bit to protect a thread body. Put a small amount aver the body and using needle spread it around.
  • Let it level off and hit it with a UV light.
  • Take a small piece of poly yarn and tie it in and then wrap around to fill in the gap between the body and the top section.
  • Take a light brown dubbing and wrap it around.
  • Fold over the top section with legs and put a wrap between 2nd and 3rd legs, advance the thread between the 1st and 2nd legs, give it a couple of wraps and bring it forward wrapping the head.
  • Finish it off with a whip finish, trim the thread off.
  • Take a dubbing teaser and tease the bottom off a bit so the thread is not visible.
  • Put some UV cure on top of the fly and spread it out with a dubbing needle. Hit it with a UV light and..done.
